In reply to <a href="https://www.truthaboutfur.com/5-reasons-support-canadian-seal-hunt/#comment-6708">Elsie</a>.

Hi Elsie, I think you need to experience a sealskin coat for yourself, but here are some general answers. There are two types of seakskin: "flat" and "true". Their characteristics are very different, but I'll assume you mean flat furs, from hair seals like the harp seal, since these are by far the most common. Fur seals have much heavier pelts. Seal fur is very tough, and smooth and silky if you rub it with the grain. It's hard to rub against the grain. It is definitely not "soft", like chinchilla or sheared beaver for example, as hair seals have no underfur. The Inuit still use it a lot, as do many other Canadians and Scandinavians. Except in the world of fashion, ankle-length coats are rare. Waist-length jackets are far more common. They weigh about the same as a cow leather jacket.
I'm doing some research for a book and I wonder if anyone knows the answers to some questions I have. What is the texture and feel of seal fur? Is it soft or course? Heavy or light? How is it similar or different to other furs? Is it oily? Also, does anyone has any information for the different ways that the intuits used it? For example, I've heard they used it in boats as well as clothes. Does anyone know how heavy an ankle length coat would be? For most of my questions it would be helpful if you were describing the traditional fur coats that the inuits make instead of the more modern fashion. Any info helps, thanks.

In reply to <a href="https://www.truthaboutfur.com/5-reasons-support-canadian-seal-hunt/#comment-5471">Sadham</a>.

Sadham, both you and the media you mention have misunderstood. Sealing as currently conducted in Canada is widely considered by veterinarians to be one of the most humane hunts there is. Aside from being inhumane, it would make no sense to "stab" the animal as this would ruin the pelt. The overwhelming majority of seals are shot through the head, causing instant death. Occasionally, a hakapik may be used to deliver a single swift blow to the skull, again causing instant death. The main use of the hakapik these days is for hauling dead seals across the ice, while it also serves a more general purpose as a safety tool, such as for hauling a hunter back onto the ice should he fall in the water. Regrettably, anti-sealing activists have never chosen to highlight these facts in their narratives, while most media are interested only in images of red blood on the snow.

May be seal hunt is useful, there is a way of killing animal....why they stab without mercy... That was the thing which made media to act against seal brutality....
